PRACTICAL GUIDE

Mobile accessibility checks

Review a mobile task using touch, larger text, and TalkBack or VoiceOver, then document the outcome.

CHECK THE ACTUAL EXPERIENCE

Choose the device, app, and task.

A mobile website and a native app need to be reviewed in their own environments. Choose a task such as locating delivery options and completing a practice enquiry. Record the device model, operating system, browser or app version, and assistive technology.

Begin on a real device where available. Record emulator or simulator use and confirm device-dependent behaviour on hardware before drawing conclusions.

Use the device’s built-in screen-reader tutorial first, including how to turn the feature off. TalkBack settings and gestures can vary by device and version.

Two useful test passes

  1. Without a screen reader, complete the task using touch and the device’s text-size or display settings.
  2. With TalkBack or VoiceOver, repeat the task using screen-reader navigation and activation.
  3. Record the outcome of each pass separately, including any settings that expose the barrier.

FOLLOW THE JOURNEY

Look beyond a smaller screen.

With standard VoiceOver gestures on iPhone, swipe right or left to move between items and double-tap to activate the selected item. TalkBack also supports moving between items and double-tap activation; follow Google’s instructions for your setup.

Explore by touch as well as moving sequentially. Compare what is announced with the task’s labels and instructions. A control should remain understandable when its visual position is not available.

What to check

  1. Increase text size. Check labels, values, messages, and buttons for truncation or overlap.
  2. Open the on-screen keyboard. Can you still reach the active field, instructions, and next action?
  3. Move through controls in sequence. Does the order make sense, including after a dialog opens and closes?
  4. Check names and states. Can you distinguish selected delivery options or expanded sections?
  5. Check touch controls and gestures. Can you operate them reliably without accidentally activating neighbours?

RECORD THE BARRIER

Keep the device settings with the finding.

Example: at a larger supported text setting, the delivery-method label is cut off and two choices become indistinguishable. Record the exact setting, screen, steps, and effect on completing the task. After the layout changes, retest at that setting and check the surrounding controls.

These checks are a practical starting point, not a complete mobile audit. Use the relevant requirements and platform guidance when deciding the scope and expected behaviour.
